You’ll hear this phrase a lot in Christian circles:
“Just wait on God’s voice.”
But what no one tells you is that sometimes… His voice won’t sound like thunder.
It won’t split the sky.
It won’t come during your 3AM prayer playlist with tears streaming down your face.
Sometimes, it’ll sound like silence.
Sometimes, it’ll sound like your own voice—but wiser.
Sometimes, it’ll feel like a nudge that doesn't make sense… until it does.
And if you’re a young woman trying to build a life, make decisions, guard your heart, and still glow while obeying God—you’ve probably already asked yourself this:
“Was that God… or just me?”
Let’s get real about something:
You’re not confused because you don’t love God.
You’re confused because no one taught you how He sounds.
Especially in this generation where everyone’s "hearing from God" on Instagram…
…while you’re begging Him for a whisper and all you’re getting is crickets.
Sound familiar?
Yeah, me too.
Here’s what they don’t say in the churchy group chats:
God’s voice doesn’t always feel spiritual.
Sometimes it shows up as a quiet "don’t go there."
Other times, it’s a bold "apply for that thing even if you’re scared."
It might even be:
“Block that number. It’s not from Me.”
“Rest. You’re not lazy—you’re tired.”
“Stop fasting for a red flag I already answered.”
“Take the opportunity. You prayed for this door.”
“You’re not too much. You’re just not for him.”
And the gag is…
God’s voice won’t always comfort you.
Sometimes it’ll confront you.
Break your ego.
Expose your idols.
Check your pride.
But that’s when you’ll know it’s Him.
Because the enemy comforts your sin.
God confronts it—with love, yes—but with intention.
The science of divine listening
Did you know your brain has something called the reticular activating system (RAS)?
It’s what filters out the noise in your world and lets in what matters.
That’s why when you’re praying for direction, suddenly everything you see aligns with your prayer.
Not because the answer just came—but because now… you’re tuned in.
Hearing God is spiritual and neurological.
It’s faith and focus.
Your spirit must be aligned and your heart must be open.
Sometimes we don’t hear Him… because we’re expecting a different tone.
But God isn’t trying to confuse you—He’s trying to grow you.
God doesn’t just speak in dreams, tongues, or prophecies.
He’ll speak:
Through the conviction after that DM you shouldn’t have answered
In the peace that covers you after declining an opportunity that felt “almost right”
In a sermon that sounds like it was eavesdropping on your journal
In the discomfort of staying where He never told you to remain
In a scripture that won’t stop echoing in your spirit
And most times, He’ll speak when you finally shut off the noise.
The podcast.
The scrolling.
The overthinking.
The voices telling you to hustle until you have no soul left.
“My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.” — John 10:27
That scripture doesn’t say “my perfect sheep.”
It doesn’t say “my always-confident sheep.”
It says “my sheep.” Period.
If you belong to Him, you can hear Him.
But you’ve got to slow down to recognize Him.
You’ve got to trust that you’re not too broken, too distracted, or too late to hear Him clearly.
He’s not speaking to the perfect version of you.
He’s speaking to the present you.
So how do you actually start hearing Him?
Here’s what no one puts in their cute reels and devotionals:
Create space for silence. God whispers. Loud lives miss it.
Get into the Word like you’re studying a love letter, not a textbook.
Ask specific questions in prayer, not vague requests. He’s detailed.
Tune into the patterns. God is consistent. If He said “no” before, He won’t say “yes” to the same trap just because it’s wearing a new outfit.
Track your prayers + revelations. Journal what you think He’s saying, then go back. Watch how He confirms it in layers.
Obey the last instruction. Stuck? Go back to the last thing He told you and actually do it.
Girl, if you want to become the woman you were built to be,
you’re going to need divine instructions.
Not just cute Pinterest quotes and “daily affirmations.”
You’ll need God’s voice.
Not just for guidance… but for becoming.
For protecting your glow-up, preserving your peace, and powering your purpose.
But nobody tells you…
Sometimes God speaks in a whisper.
And if your life is too loud, too crowded, too self-led,
you’ll miss it.
You’ll run in circles.
You’ll keep needing “signs” for things you already know.
You’ll confuse delay with denial.
You’ll settle… when you were called to soar.
And maybe, just maybe…
That uneasiness in your spirit?
That low-grade anxiety?
That thing you keep calling “overthinking”?
It’s not confusion.
It’s direction you’re ignoring.
It’s clarity waiting for obedience.
Because hearing God is never the problem.
He’s always speaking.
The real question is...
Are you really listening?
Or are you just waiting for Him to agree with what you already decided?
This is the part where I’m supposed to say, “that’s all,”
but sis…
we’re just getting started.
Your next season?
Requires a different level of listening.
But you’ll get there.
One whisper at a time.
Now go back, re-read the parts that punched you in the gut—and this time, write down what you hear Him saying.
Because trust me…
He’s been speaking.
You’re just now quiet enough to hear.
